Tasting - Dona Sol's Shiraz, Petite Syrah &Symphony

Name: Dona Sol's Shiraz, Petite Syrah & Symphony
Variety: Shiraz, Petite Syrah &Symphony
Region: California
Country: USA
Non-vintage.
Price: $6.95

The winery's review: "Shiraz has a unique jammy fruit character that is well represented in the Sweet Red. Both on the nose and on the palate, jammy fruit, like strawberries, cherry pie and red licorice, entices the senses and pair well with cheeses and desserts."

My review: This dessert wine was more viscous than the others. It had a sweet taste that seemed like it would go well with chocolate-y desserts. I did not try it with food.

Tasting - Avery Quinn Zinfandel

Name: Avery Quinn Zinfandel
Variety: Zinfandel
Region: Santa Rosa, CA
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $6.95 (sale, normally $15)

The winery's review: "Lightly spicy aromas and rich, soothing fruit flavors make this an attractive, lovable and classically proportioned wine. Cherry and raspberry flavors rest on a lightly tannic but smooth texture, and linger on the finish."

My review: I did not like this red wine - it was bitter, and had a peppery spice along with berry flavors that I didn't care for. I did not try it with food.

Tasting - Finca del Castillo's Tempranillo

Name: Finca del Castillo's Tempranillo
Variety: Tempranillo:
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2015
Price: $4.95

The winery's review: "Vivid ruby. Spice-accented red and dark berry aromas show good clarity and a hint of fresh rose. Juicy and seamless on the palate, offering lively currant and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter with air. Clings with good tenacity on the energetic finish, which repeats the floral note and shows no tannins."

My review: This one had a sweet smell, and the taste seemed acidic and floral. Once you got past the strong alcohol aftertaste, the flavor was good. I did not try it with food.

Tasting - Pieter Cruythoft Chenin Blanc

Name: Pieter Cruythoff's Chenin Blanc
Variety: Chenin Blanc
Region: Swartland
Country: South Africa
Year: 2015
Price: $4.95 (sale, normally $9)

The winery's review: "A wonderful nose of bananas, oranges and melons jumps from the glass of this 100% Chenin Blanc, which is finished with a screw cap. Another great value from South Africa, this wine is medium-bodied, fresh, lively, and a terrific dry white to drink over the next year."

My review: This white wine was much sweeter than the first, a little too sweet for my taste.  To be honest, my palate isn't refined enough to taste the "bananas, oranges, and melons" yet. I did not try it with food.

Tasting - El Cortijillo Verdejo

Name: El Cortijillo Verdejo
Variety: Verdejo
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2015
Price: $4.95

The wine shop's review: "Golden straw color. Bright, attractive, tropical aromas of creme brulee and fruit tart with a silky, bright, dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body and a smooth, intriguing, snappy lime and apple finish with crunchy, fruit tannins and light oak. A super smooth and pure white sipper."
My review: This white wine had a sweet, fruity smell.  The taste was smooth, dry, and fruity. I did not have it with food

My Personal Experience with Wine

My mother considers herself a "wine drinker," but doesn't drink it very often because she doesn't want to open a bottle by herself, as the rest of our family really doesn't drink wine.  I take more after my dad, who is a beer and mixed drink-kinda-guy.  I also grew up in the rural area of southwestern VA, a tiny town called Hillsville, and from the name you should be able to guess there aren't many fine dinner parties where wine knowledge would be helpful.
I know very little about wine. During my first wine tasting this week, the first thing I said after sniffing a glass of Verdejo was, "smells like wine..." I prefer the white wines normally, but I also enjoy certain red wines, too - something sweet but still a little dry.  I don't enjoy super sweet wines or the bitter reds, but hopefully I can come to appreciate them!
After coming to college and being exposed to people who didn't wear cowboy boots with their daily outfits, I realized that knowing more about wine wouldn't be such a bad idea. So that's why I'm in this class! So I can pretend I'm sophisticated and know what I'm talking about!
